Kosher restaurant: why people cannot find you

Kosher restaurant owners: why general-purpose tools classify you poorly, what a Keila listing displays, and how to check whether your restaurant is included.

You run a kosher restaurant in Paris. You have a current certificate, a carefully prepared menu and loyal regulars. Yet when someone who does not know you searches “kosher restaurant” on their phone, you are not necessarily the first result. Sometimes you are not even on the list.

It is not a quality problem. It is a classification problem. Here is why, and what Keila does differently.

Why general-purpose tools classify you poorly

Map and booking apps are very good at what they were built for: finding a restaurant, booking a table, reading reviews. But they are not designed for kashrut. Meat, dairy, pareve, supervising organisation and certificate scope have no dedicated place, leaving searchers to guess from photos and comments.

As a result, several things become mixed in the same list:

  • certified restaurants alongside “kosher-style” or “Jewish cuisine” restaurants, without distinction;
  • places that closed or changed supervision, still displayed;
  • opening hours that account for neither Shabbat nor holidays;
  • reviews claiming “not kosher” or “definitely kosher”, without anyone checking.

For customers with precise requirements, that is an obstacle. For you, it means time on the phone answering the same questions.

What a Keila listing displays today

Keila is a free iPhone app for finding somewhere to eat in Paris according to dietary requirements: kosher first, but also vegan and vegetarian. It is coming soon to the App Store. Where information is available, a listing presents:

ElementWhat customers see
CertificationThe organisation, source and date, shown separately from the restaurant’s own declarations.
ScopeThe whole establishment, or only options.
Kosher typeMeat, dairy or pareve, filterable in Explore.
MenuYour menu readable directly in the app, with dishes, set menus and variations, its source and the date recorded. Otherwise, a link to your official menu.
HoursIndicative weekly hours, with their source and the date recorded.
PhotosEvery image has a credit. A brand’s dish photo is distinguished from a photo of the venue.
ReviewsKeila reviews are reviewed before publication. Before five reviews, an external rating may appear with its source, review count and date.

Filters also allow searching by cuisine, budget and named supervising organisation. Someone looking for dairy in the 17th finds dairy restaurants in the 17th. That is the point: being found by people actually looking for you, rather than lost among every pizzeria in the neighbourhood.

Certification and declaration: the rule that protects you

Keila certifies nothing. Certification comes from your organisation: Beth Din de Paris, Rabbinat Loubavitch de France or another. Keila checks sources and displays their nature. What we check, line by line, is detailed in Beth Din de Paris certified restaurant: how to check.

In practice, if you tell us “we are kosher”, the listing shows it as your declaration. Certification requires identified evidence, such as your establishment appearing in the organisation’s public directory, or a submitted document. The two never share the same label.

That may seem strict. It is precisely what makes the filter reliable to your most demanding customers: when your certification is documented, it is read as such. And a review can never change it. These rules are detailed on our method page and in our article on reading a certificate.

Are you already in Keila?

Probably, if you are in Paris or Île-de-France. As of 5 October 2026, to our knowledge, the catalogue contains 290 places across Paris and Île-de-France, covering all diets, from Levallois to Saint-Mandé and Boulogne to Sarcelles. It is built from kosher directories, the official Beth Din de Paris directory, official websites and public sources. 106 have documented certification checked in that directory. Listed places have paid nothing to be there.

To check or complete your listing, write to thomas@keila.app with:

  • the establishment’s name and address;
  • your supervising organisation, if applicable;
  • your role in the establishment;
  • a link to your official menu, if you have one.

If information about you is incorrect, you can report it too. Corrections are reviewed before publication and never applied automatically.

A tip: send what you already have. The link to the page in your organisation’s directory naming your establishment, your website, your online menu. Certification in an organisation’s public directory is quick to cross-check. A scanned document or information that conflicts between sources needs a conversation with you, so it takes a little longer.

The offers, plainly explained

Being listed in Keila is free. Offers help complete your listing and, later, promote it. They change neither certification nor ratings: payment buys no dietary status.

  • Standard, €39, one-off: a complete, checked listing, without a subscription.
  • Premium and Business, monthly subscriptions: visibility tools to come, such as a dashboard, promoted placements or a targeted notification before Shabbat and holidays. None of this is live yet, and we will say clearly when it is.
  • Production: photos and videos of your establishment, created by us. We discuss this in why photos change everything.

Offer details are on the restaurant owners’ page. To see the app from the customer’s side, visit the home page.

Frequently asked questions

How do I list my kosher restaurant in Keila?
Write to thomas@keila.app with the name, address, supervising organisation and your role in the establishment. Your restaurant may already be listed.
Do I have to pay to appear in Keila?
No. Listed places have paid nothing. Paid offers complete the listing and its visibility, without ever changing certification or ratings.
Can Keila certify my restaurant?
No. Certification comes from your supervising organisation. Keila checks the source and displays it separately from your declarations.
My restaurant is vegan or vegetarian. Is this for me?
Yes. Keila also covers vegan and vegetarian places, with the same rules: declarations and certification shown separately, with source and date.
Is Keila available beyond Paris?
Not yet beyond its initial region. Keila currently covers Paris and part of Île-de-France, from Boulogne to Sarcelles. Strasbourg, Lyon and Marseille are the next cities planned, with no announced date.
