1. Rue Dénoyez: into the neighbourhood
From Belleville metro, head to Rue Dénoyez to begin away from the main junction. Look at the walls and façades as they are on the day rather than hunting for a particular image seen online: street scenes change. Be considerate of residents and building entrances when you stop. Then use your map to make your way through neighbourhood streets towards the Vilin area, leaving the park climb for the next stage.
2. Vilin: reading a vanished streetscape
Approach the park from the Rue Vilin side. Part of this former street disappeared as the neighbourhood changed; Georges Perec lived here as a child. The City of Paris feature offers documents to help understand the earlier landscape before visiting. Read a short passage or look at a photograph, then compare it with today’s surroundings. The aim is not to find an unchanged house, but to understand what stood before the garden.
3. The park and Willy-Ronis viewpoint
Enter through an open gate and climb gradually towards the viewpoint. Break the effort into several short pauses instead of choosing the most direct way up. At the top, take time to look across the roofs before reaching for your camera. The view rewards the climb, but it is no reason to insist everyone tackles steps: if the terrain does not suit your group, choose a shorter version around the lower streets.
4. Couronnes: back down to the boulevard
Follow open paths downhill towards Rue des Couronnes, then return to Boulevard de Belleville. Do not cut through planted areas to save a few metres. The meal options are at numbers 92 and 112 on the boulevard: choose your final direction using the selected card. The contrast with the park’s relative quiet is part of the outing. Finish with time at the table instead of adding another climb.
Where to stop for a kosher meal
Both suggested addresses are on Boulevard de Belleville. Compare their cards and kosher information before arranging to meet: the neighbourhood name alone does not establish what you need. Confirm meal arrangements directly and leave a buffer after the descent. For a group outing, choose your table before setting off so everyone is not left waiting on the pavement.
