A kosher walk around Opéra and the covered passages

Walk from Palais Garnier through Passages Verdeau, Jouffroy and Panoramas, finishing with kosher food on Rue Geoffroy-Marie.

This kosher walk near Opéra pairs a grand Parisian façade with passages best explored slowly. Start at Palais Garnier, continue towards Drouot and cross three galleries before returning to Rue Geoffroy-Marie for food. The route is compact, but it is not entirely sheltered. Passages and shops keep their own hours: plan a daytime walk and use neighbouring streets as alternatives if a gallery is closed.

Distances and times are route estimates. Indoor visits are optional and may require separate reservations under each venue’s admission conditions.

1. Palais Garnier from the square

Start by viewing Palais Garnier from the square without stopping on crossings. An indoor visit can replace part of the passages, but is not a quick detour: access also depends on the theatre’s programme. For the outdoor version, take Boulevard Haussmann eastwards towards Drouot. You do not need to stop at every shop window.

2. Find the entrance to Passage Verdeau

Head up Rue Drouot towards Rue de Provence and find the northern entrance to Passage Verdeau. Look for the gallery name above the doorway: a shop entrance can resemble a public passage here. Inside, notice the glass roof and shopfronts before exiting onto Rue de la Grange-Batelière. If it is closed, use surrounding streets to continue.

3. Cross Jouffroy and then Panoramas

Enter Passage Jouffroy from Rue de la Grange-Batelière and follow it to Boulevard Montmartre. Use a pedestrian crossing to reach Passage des Panoramas opposite. These galleries do not form one continuous tunnel: the street crossing is part of the route. Keep doorways clear when stopping to photograph signs or glass-roof details.

4. Return towards Geoffroy-Marie for your meal

After exploring Panoramas, return to the boulevard, then take Rue du Faubourg-Montmartre towards Rue Geoffroy-Marie. This short return is intentional: it keeps the meal near the passages without inventing kosher stops inside each gallery. Finish here or explore more of the 9th afterwards. Avoid adding an unplanned museum visit just before a restaurant reservation.

Where to stop for a kosher meal

The records below offer two options on the same street. Choose according to the meal you want and the evidence shown. There is no need to turn the walk into a compulsory tasting tour. Cafés and restaurants inside the passages are part of the scenery, not suggested kosher alternatives to these selected records.

  • Douieb

    11 bis rue Geoffroy-Marie, 75009 Paris

Documented certification : Beth Din de Paris

  • Rosetta 9e

3 rue Geoffroy Marie, 75009 Paris

These places come from Keila’s published catalogue. Each card explains its evidence. Confirm the kosher certificate and service with the restaurant before travelling; Shabbat and holidays may affect opening.

Before you go

  • Check passage opening arrangements, especially at weekends. An open gallery does not mean every shop is open; neighbouring streets provide alternatives.
  • For a Garnier visit, check the official calendar before arranging lunch. Do not assume every space will be accessible on your chosen day.
  • Bring rain protection: links between Opéra, Drouot and the entrances are outdoors, even on a walk devoted to covered passages.
